About Me

Hi!

My name is Miles, I’ve been playing boardgames for over 20 years when I started playing with my grandparents. I started with the classic boardgames such as chess and checkers, monopoly, and clue.

I realized that quickly I was enjoying “boardgames” but I wasn’t really enjoying the boardgame I was playing (though I still do love chess). I wanted a bit more depth and strategy as well as the fact that I don’t really enjoy having a winner and a loser.

Like many others in my generation, it felt like the door was blown wide open with games such Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne. These eurogames took over the boardgame market and became immensely popular. No longer were you the byproduct of a dice roll or an unlucky draw (at least not always) but instead your choices had lasting consequences and you were able develop a unique strategy independent from the others you were playing with. Every game felt different to one another as both the board and your objectives shifted each game. I also believe one of the main successes for these boardgames was they appealed to an older market, previously boardgames were reserved for children, but now boardgames were able to become a friends & family event.

Once I knew what boardgames could be, I quickly expanded my collection to encompass a wide variety of games for every different mood and event. I’m currently sitting at just over 45 different boardgames in my collection. I hope to continue to development the collection, but for now the limiting factors are space and money.

As of now, I play boardgames twice a week with a few friends I met on my local city’s Reddit page. We typically play heavier boardgames with some of my favorites so far being Spirit Island and Great Western Trail. Boardgames will likley be a lifelong hobby unless a new crazy type of game comes around and replaces it for me.
